From the outskirts of Penicuik we enter a woodland for about a mile before crossing Loan Burn into a housing estate.  A short distance through the houses and we come to Cuiken Glen which will eventually bring us into the centre of Penicuik.

Leaving Penicuik Main Street behind we go into Beeslack Wood and join the Dalkeith to Penicuik Cycle Trail.  Where this trail ends we cross over the A701 onto the footpath alongside the River North Esk.  The path meanders through woodland eventually reaching Penicuik Estate and Penicuik House (Built in 1760s by Sir James Clerk, 3rd Baronet of Penicuik, it was destroyed by fire in 1899.  Restoration began in 2007 and was completed in 2014) bringing us back to our start point.

This walk uses paved footpaths, woodland/riverside paths and cycle routes.  Some of these paths can become very muddy in places and therefore waterproof walking boots essential.
