ShowStoppers!
More than 100 local children had fun at the Carluke Joint Churches' holiday club held in Crawforddyke Primary School. Run over 5 mornings, attendance was at record levels. Its success was due to the team efforts of over 50 adults and young people. The holiday club was based on Scripture Union's Showstoppers! material, a programme with a creative arts theme that included games, crafts, music, drama and Bible stories.
Every morning the children enjoyed the antics of Bonzo and Blossom (Andrew Cunningham, Kirkton Church and Karen Gillon, St John's Church). The children learned several songs during the week, accompanied by the band. The warm-up was a lively aerobics session led by Caralyn and Fraser that the children looked forward to every morning.
Using PowerPoint displays and DVD we learned of God's big plan for the world. We heard about Adam and Eve, David and Goliath, Daniel in the lions' den, Jesus' birth, death and resurrection. Where else could you celebrate Christmas and Easter in the same week! The Drama team entertained each day with lively sketches, we even had our own X-Factor auditions! In the Spotlight reporter Ann Walker interviewed several crew members during the week and we learned what God meant to them.
The children were encouraged to post jokes, news and prayers in the box that were read out each day. The kids were divided into 2 groups, for team games and the points were added up during the week and guess what - it was a draw! All the children got a packet of sweets.
Craft work included card doves and mobiles, decorated stones, masks, angels and badges and boxes. The younger groups used themed Star Sheets each day with puzzles and questions to answer. The older groups used books that they filled in during the week that they got to take home. Juice and biscuits were an important part of our group time.
The Parents night on Friday evening was well attended by friends and family of the children. The entertainment was in-house and provided a snap shot of the week's activities. Refreshments were served and the home baking was delicious.
