St John's: A Brief History - 1993 to 2000

150th Anniversary to the New Millenium

 

1993  

A major redecoration of the sanctuary takes place and the lighting is replaced with modern sodium lighting. Concerts and events are held throughout the year; Former ministers are invited back as guest preachers, including The Rev Dr W Storrar (minister of St John's from 1985-1991) on 16 May (nearest Sunday to the actual anniversary) and the Very Rev Dr Andrew Doig at the 'official' anniversary communion service in August.

CHOICES community shop is opened, and the ruling bodies of 5 congregations in the town jointly agree to embark on a Youth Project, which will be known as Street Level.

1994

Trekkers (walking group) is inaugurated.

Stewart Cutler is appointed as the first full time detached youth worker for the Street Level project.

1995

An induction loop system is proposed for the halls to complement that already in the sanctuary.

The time of the evening service is changed from 6.30pm to 7.00pm.

1996

A computer and printer are acquired. Alan Grant is set apart as a lay reader.

1997

AD2000: Year of Faith

Michelle Guinness, Jewish Christian writer and broadcaster, speaks on Jewish Roots.

A programme of repairs, mainly to the exterior of the building, is undertaken at a cost of approximately £22,000.

1998

AD2000: Year of Hope

The first Child Protection Co-ordinator, Russell Rodger, is appointed.

Alterations are made to a pew to improve facilities for worshippers in wheelchairs.

A pay phone is installed.

1999

AD2000: Year of Love

A Joint Carluke Churches Millennium Committee is formed to organise events.

The Urn's no longer On, having more than fulfilled its purpose of helping to raise funds for the Hall Extension Project.

Alan Gibson begins his probationary time with St John's, prior to full ordination.

Monthly evening services are started in Crawforddyke Primary School in an attempt to meet the people where they live.

Myra Gibson (co-incidently, mother to Alan), a local art teacher, is commissioned to design and make new falls for the pulpit and lectern. Their creation is made possible through donations from their families in memory of two elders: Eddie Warnock and Joe Murdoch, who had died in 1998, and Joe's wife, Nancy, who had died in 1995.

2000

AD2000: The New Millennium

Carluke churches celebrate the millennium together. A watchnight service on New Year's Eve is followed by a torchlight procession to the Market to join in the town celebrations. A "millennium pack" is distributed to every home in the town an neighbouring villages explaining the Christian significance of AD 2000.

In May, new falls for pulpit and lectern are dedicated.

Jee-Eun Choi from Seoul, South Korea, comes to Carluke as a Faithshare Partner. She is based in Carluke, and works mainly with the three Church of Scotland congregations.

In November, two services in St John's are recorded for transmission by STV the following January.
